Quad Knopf Cross Weekend - Bakersfield, California, November 11-12, 2006
Prenzlow and Popovic win; Noble takes $100 "Run Up Challenge"
Light winds, cool weather, and a dusting of rain on Saturday greeted crossers at the Quad Knopf Cyclocross race in Bakersfield, California. Rounds 5 and 6 provided good cross weather and a departure from the 85 degree heat in most the previous Southern California (SoCal) Cross Prestige Series races.
Hart Memorial Park provided two fast and challenging world class courses for riders. Over 100 racers each day provided racing action and close finishes.
Flat tires and mechanicals plagued riders in all races, but the winners of the elite men's and women's races were spared. Carolyn Popovic of Figueroa Farms-Redline Racing battled both days with junior phenom, Coryn Rivera (Major's Motion). Saturday, it was Popovic trading the lead with Rivera. By the halfway mark, Popovic established her lead for the win. Sunday, Popovic and Rivera gapped the field early. An on-form Popovic broke Rivera leaving teammates, Many Eakins and Dorothy Wong to reel in Rivera and take second and third respectively for a TeamRedFig.com podium sweep.
In men's elite category, Brent Prenzlow (Celo Pacific/Salsa) showed impressive form. He bided his time for a lap or two then powered away both days for double wins. Saturday, Prenzlow and the dynamic duo of Mark Noble (Cal Raisins) and Chance Noble (Cal Giant-Specialized) got away from the group in lap three with Chance chasing hard after Prenzlow in the final lap. 500 meters from the line it was close, but Prenzlow took the win with Chance second and Mark Noble third. Sunday was a faster course, but the results were almost the same. The group stayed together for over two laps until Prenzlow surged ahead with the Nobles. Prenzlow took the win with Mark Noble second and Chance third.
The buzz of the day was the $100 challenge. At the conclusion of the final race, Race Director Sam Ames threw out a $100 cash challenge… an open race for all in which riders started at the line and the first one to the top of the 400 meter hillside run up with his or her bike won the cash. It was crazy. Riders from all categories took off, some without wheels and scrambled up the insanely steep and challenging run up. Many gave up halfway, but Mark Noble blazed a trail towards the flag narrowly taking the prize ahead of Bobby Langin. It was an unique event and one sure to be an annual affair.
The seventh round of So Cal Prestige Series continues Sunday, November 26th with the Turkey Trot Cross in Glendale, California.
