Gene Galindo Memorial Turkey Trot 'Cross - Verdugo Park, Glendale, California, November 29, 2006
On one of the first cool days of the year, over 170 racers took the start at the 3rd Annual Gene Galindo Memorial Turkey Trot Cross on November 26th. With many racers saying this is their favorite race course in Southern California the day did not disappoint.
The course was a mix of wide open straights and twisty off camber grass sections that gave both the power riders and the technical riders chances to succeed. Often the crucial selection took place in the 50 foot section of deep sand affectionately known as the Tot Park Sand Trap. Riders battled hard to hit the sand with the lead group so they could preserve a clean line as mid pack riders often bogged down and slowed the progress of those behind them.
Brent Prenzlow (Celo Pacific / Salsa) completed the Turkey Trot hat trick by winning his 3rd Turkey Trot in a row over a stacked elite men's field. Major Motion Junior Coryn Rivera's first cyclo-cross race ever was last year's Turkey Trot. According to her father, she spent most of the race crashing in the tight turns. At the end of the race, she vowed to come back and win and win she did, besting the field to win the elite women's race. Both Prenzlow and Rivera received a special treat when they stood atop the podium and were handed custom made title belts signifying their wins!
Though many exciting battles took place throughout the day the most memorable was when PAA / Merrill Lynch / Bicycle John's member Brad Galindo won the hotly contested Mens 45+ race. The victory was especially sweet as the race was being run in memory of Brad's uncle Gene Galindo who recently died after a lengthy battle with cancer.
In other racing action, PAA / Merrill Lynch / Sixtufit racer Fritz Bottger continued his dominance of the singlespeed class and Northern California racer James Coates of Morgan Stanley won the Mens 35+ race. Probably the best photo op of the day was when a dozen future crossers stood together atop the podium and were awarded stuffed turkey hats and medals signifying their completion of the "Apache Joe" Kids Race.
The eighth round of SoCalCross Prestige Series continues Sunday, December 10th with Dam Cross! Also, the SCNCA Cyclocross Championships.
