Ohio State cyclo-cross championships - John Bryan State Park, December 10, 2006

This past Sunday Biowheels Racing celebrated the fourth straight year of cyclo-cross at John Bryan State Park with the series finale of the 15-race Ohio Valley Cyclo-cross Series (OVCX) and the USCF Ohio State Championships. The lure of double points for the OVCX series swelled the field sizes, and 99 racers competed in 10 categories. When the dust settled ten new champions walked away ready to head into the National Championship weekend just a few days away.

Unseasonably warm weather melted the frozen ground, and threw a wrench in the works of a well designed course, that turned treacherous and more technical than anticipated. In the men’s race, Phil Noble of Biowheels headed into the final race just a few points ahead of Texas Roadhouse’s Kevin Atkinson. Noble turned a great performance in the face of steep imported competition from Pennsylvania, Michigan and Illinois, finishing tenth on the day despite staying up too late the night before. Atkinson became entangled in the course, and although he went away early with Jon Card from Cane Creek, the course forced a mechanical that kept Atkinson from claiming the series stop spot. Card soloed in for the win, but was pushed all the way to the line by Ernesto Marenchin from Asylum Cycles and Shawn Adams from Alan Factory. Endurance mountain bike racer Marenchin brought home the gold medal as the first Ohio State Elite finisher.

In the women’s race Anne Schwartz from Flying Rhino came all the way down from Michigan to get in one final weekend before Nationals. Local 16-year old phenomenon Michelle Morris turned on the heat to finish 2nd ahead of Anne Conroy from Revolution. Michelle was crowned the Elite Ohio State Champion and the overall series winner.

The rest of the series races were also hotly contested, including the Men’s B race which came down to a slug match between Dave “Mr 38 Tooth” Emig and Marcus Moran of Team Louisvile. Moran got the win, but Emig walked away happy with the Ohio State Championship. In the 35+ Master’s race Ramon Corpuz (COBC) claimed the gold medal, as did Jeffrey Craft (Team Lake Effect) the 45+. Lou Beckmeyer (7 Hills Racing) was the winner and State Champion in the C race.

The John Bryan course also featured one of the largest junior fields. Jarret Frouhiger from QCW pulled off the win and the state championship after finishing in a borrowed bike. Ambrose Doborzsi, also from QCW, won the 15-18 category, while Colleen Morris took home the honors in the girl’s 10-14 category.
