Encore Cycling hosted the 2005 SCNCA California State Championship Race presented by CapitalChoice and SHIMANO at Camp James/Wild Rivers in Irvine. While the forecast threatened rain on race day, only a light sprinkling fell on the course the night before, so racers were greeted yet again by sunny skies and warm temperatures.

On the 11th stop of the So Cal Cyclocross Series, 16 new state champions were crowned as the intensity of the racing reflected the growing enthusiasm of cyclocross in Southern California. The Camp James course featured three distinct sections, a grassy field with a double wheel pit, the lower section with fast, dirt fire roads and the upper section with tight, twisty turns and tricky transitions. Other notable course sections included the Warner Springs triple barrier set-up directly in front of the expo area, as spectators and racers alike were treated to a festival atmosphere with a free BBQ and beer garden run by Encore Cycling's own Big Mike Eaves. With much of the credit going to course designer and race director, Jason Perkins of Encore Cycling, many of the races were decided in exciting bunch sprints in front of large cheering galleries. Jason said after the race, "I couldn't have done it without the help of my team, sponsors, Back on Track Productions and Jeff Prinz assisting on the great course design!"

Highlights included the first finish of the day that ended in a 3-man sprint in the Master Men's 50+ category. Ricky Russell (Met Rx), Rick Swanson (Radsport) were all nipped at the line by series leader, Jonathan Livesay (PAA/Merril Lynch). Santa Cross race director, Gary Hanson (Amgen) upset series leader Chris Gallup (Celo Pacific) to take the Bear jersey with Gallup finishing 3rd and mighty man, David Howell (Big Ring) taking the silver. In the 30+ race a game of cat and mouse between several riders came down to an exciting sprint finish with Sam Ames of Simply Fit/Action Sports riding tactically for the win. Fred Bottger of PAA/Merrill Lynch who rode a gutsy and strong race took second and in third was Carlos Matias Mendigochea of Kahala Velo/La Grange. Stephen Fitzgerald won the Men C title and David Gibson (Team Velocity) the newbie Men D title. On the top spot of the Women's B podium it was Lisa Vorell (Encore Cycling) who fought back tears of joy after fighting off series nemesis, Heidi Kanayan (3 Pines Lodge/Bear Valley Bikes/661) as they battle for the series championship along with Beth Gentry (Team Pro Cyclery) who took home the bronze medal.

The future of our sport is the ever-growing Junior field. Championships were handed out this year in two age groups (10-14 and 15-18). 17 Juniors displayed their cross skills with National Road Champion, Coryn Rivera (Major Motion) winning her first Junior Women's Cyclocross title over series leader and National Mountain bike champ, Brittney VanVleet (KHS/Swamis) and Kendall Ryan (Scaryfast) finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Alexis Ryan (Scaryfast) and Amanda Duarte (Karl Strauss/SDBC) rounded out the top 5.

(Click for larger image) She is already state champ in everything else in her age group so it was no surprise that Coryn Rivera (Major Motion) won the 10-14 women's race.

The Junior Men were on fire as the 10-14 Champion of the day was, Ian Moir (Major Motion) kept a solid gap over Miles Ludi (Karl Straus/SDBC) who took home the silver and Morgan Ryan (Scaryfast) the bronze. Ian was also the fastest Junior of the day and also placed 13th in the Men's A race! Brandon Lee (Trek VW) in his first SoCalCross race won the 15-18 championship, upsetting series leader, Didier Jourdain who finished 2nd and Andrew Jackson took home the bronze borrowing a pair of mountain bike shoes and pedals in his first ever cross race!

In a historic year of SoCal Cyclocross, we could not leave out the women's masters titles. Southbay Wheelmen's Keli Roberts took the 40+ championship while Robin MacDonald Foley (Conejo Valley), Jeanne Bernard (Hi Tech Bikes) and Donna Bertiger won gold, silver and bronze respectively in the Women's 50+… you go girls!!!

The largest field of the day in the Men's B with 27 racers vying for the SCNCA State Champion Jersey! Jason Vorell (Encore Cycling) out sprinted Bernard Georges (Hup United), Gregory Hammond (Shimano), and Mike Tettleton (Encore Cycling) in another exciting finish, while Dan Breyer (Celo Pacific) rode his way to victory in the Single Speed championship.

Grabbing top honors and winning her 8th straight Elite Women's A championship Dorothy Wong (Kelly Bicycle Co.) used her road power on the long flat sections to gap the women's field on the first lap which left Pro MTBer Carolyn Popovic (Evomo) and Expert MTBer Mandy Eakins (AFP/Velosport) to duke it out on their own throughout the race, Popovic gapped Eakins at the Warner Springs triple barrier section in the final moments of the race for her first silver medal in SoCal with Mandy getting the bronze.

The feature event of the day treated spectators to a raging fast start in the Elite Men's A race. John Behrens and Jeff Herring of Celo Pacific/Salsa took to the front on lap one which strung out the field of 20 racers and a small group formed, but by lap two it was "Mark the Shark" Noble of Amgen attacking the group and establishing a 20 second gap very quickly. Brent Prenzlow and John Behrens of Celo Pacific/Salsa took up the chase and put in a stellar effort but Noble held on for the win in commanding fashion with Prenzlow 2nd and Behrens 3rd.

"We need to thank so many people for helping to make this event possible. Shimano, Capitol Choice, all the racers that attended, SCOS, Encore Cycling, Selle Italia, Back On Track Productions, Control Tech, all the people that helped with course set-up and especially Jason Perkins who was instrumental in making this event run smoothly. "The feed back we got back from the racers and spectators was very positive. We wanted to make a strong impression and show our team's passion and commitment to cycling and cyclocross, and I think we accomplished that", said Jason Vorell, co-race director and newly crowned State Champion.
