Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series Race #2

Mahoney Park, Lincoln, NE, October 19, 2003

Another Schlake Bake

On a day that saw a new record for high temperature, Darin Schlake (Team Kaos) continued his winning ways in the 2003 Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series with a dominant performance sunday afternoon at Mahoney Park in Lincoln.

From the gun, it was a battle between Team Kaos and LBC/Highgear at the front with riders working for position on the fast, but rough 1-mile course. After a few circuits of posturing from both sides, Schlake made his move blazing off the front and opening an immediate 10 second gap on the chase group of Jay Thomas (LBC/Highgear) and Joe McWilliams (Team Kaos). As the lead for Schlake grew to 1 minute, the race for second began in earnest as Thomas took advantage of an unfortunate mechanical by Kevin Wilkins (Team Kaos) to split the chase group.

While Schlake maintained an insurmountable advantage, the exciting chess match for the final five cash places moved forward as Thomas pulled away in the final five laps with Team Kaos rider, Joe McWilliams. With four laps to go, the third group on the road containing Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth riders Paul Chapman and Chad Carpenter, Steve Jarrett (Highgear/LBC), Tyler Carmichael (LBC/Highear) and Mark Savery (Footloose and Fancy) began taking their shots at breaking away to secure maximum points in the Pedro's Points Competition.

Unable to shake each other, Jarrett was finally able to pull away in the final four laps to bridge to his teammate Thomas. In a move that surprised everyone in the chase group, Tyler Carmichael stormed off the front to take hold of fifth position on the road. Meanwhile, Savery found himself in the unenviable position of policing moves from the Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth tandem of Carpenter and Chapman. As the competition for the top six places played out, Kevin Wilkins (Team Kaos) was putting on an amazing comeback working his way through the field after falling back by half a lap early on in the 60-minute contest.

While Schlake rolled across the line securing another first place finish and snagging 10 more points in the Pedro's Points Competition, the sprint for second was beginning as McWilliams, Thomas and Jarrett worked for position on the final stretch of road.

"I couldn't believe how long we waited," commented Jarrett. "I could see the line and decided to go."

McWilliams looked matched the jump, but was forced to settle for third place while Thomas rolled across in fourth position.

In the Division B race, Tim Farnham took top honors in only his second cyclo-cross race! Other winners included: Division C, Jason Kingsbury (Team Kaos), Masters 30+, Jared Shuttleworth (Hsuker Road Club), Masters 40+, Jeff Luedtke (Husker Road Club), Marie Neville (Team Kaos) and Matt Farnham in the Juniors (13-15).
