Trebon thwarts Fuji SE sweep for State Title at NC #5

Men's Elite Podium

Ryan Trebon (Kona/Easton/CCA) showed everyone why he is one of the top ranked cyclocross racers in the country. From the whistle, the lanky NC rider took off on a crushing first lap that put everyone into difficulty, the race being diminished to a quest for silver and bronze. Of course, what team was better suited for that pursuit, then the trio of men from Fuji SE.

With thoughts of trying to bring back the incredibly talented Trebon, the three man team form Fuji SE, consisting of Charlie Storm, Dan Doub, and Charles Pendry, seemed to work together for a couple of laps. Pendry eventually found himself alone, and the dynamic duo of Storm and Doub relented on. Then with four to go, Doub had opened a sizeable gap on Storm and maintained this to the finish for the Silver Medal. "We both had problems keeping our chains on," said Doub when I spoke with him after the race. Storm, the Bronze Medal winner, supplemented Dan's comments by saying that they both took turns having problems. "I would loose a chain on one section and Dan would gap me. I'd come around the corner, and Dan would be messing with his bike." Storm speculated that higher tire pressure might have contributed to the dilemma.

Unsurprisingly, the impressive Trebon won the NC State Championship gold medal, while Fuji SE team picked up the remaining spoils. Had it not been for the return of NC's own, Trebon, the Fuji boys would have had their second clean sweep of the podium.

In other races of the day, current Master's National Champion runner-up, Andy Applegate of Kona/Easton/CCA, showed everyone why he is a force to be reckoned with, as he made a beautiful surge in the Master's 35 race to win the state title. The more interesting melee was between Derek Powers (Doughnut Boy) and Rob Moran (Cycling Spoken Here). The two fought hard throughout the entire race. Powers would consistently gap Moran on the barrier-laden run-up, while Moran would counter in the sand. On the last lap, Moran knew what was going to happen. Just as expected, Powers jumped on the run-up, and Moran lost traction on the ensuing grade. This allowed Powers to maintain his margin to finish in second, taking the silver medal. Moran finished with the Bronze. In the Master's 45 race, Martin Visser (NOC) won the gold, while Andrew Ammon (Carolina Masters Cycling) and Kerry Sheilds (Carolina Masters Cycling) took the silver and bronze, respectively.

Candice Blickem (Genesis Scuba) continued her domination in the women's A Race, with a smooth ride to the finish. Daniele Staskal (Doughnut Boy) took the silver, while Kathleen Billington (Fuji/Diet Cheerwine) finished up the trio. In the women's B Race, there was also no surprise that Sarah Worthington (Doughnut Boy) took the gold, with her 4th victory. Connie Hanscom finished second, but again, a SC resident, so the silver went to 3rd place finisher, Sarah Alholm, while the bronze medal went to Cathy Beck (GVC).

In the Men's C race, Lloyd Jones (ABRC) won his third race of the series, taking the gold medal, and subsequently was asked to move up to the "Killer" B's. Dave Standridge (Cross Creek) and Chris Ramm (Paceline) finished up the podium. In the Men's "Killer" B race, Ryan McCall (Raleigh All-Stars) won the event with Kenneth Borgson finishing with the silver medal. The bronze state championship medal went to 4th place finisher, James Badia (Spin Cycle), while 3rd place finisher, Todd Hanscomb (Spartanburg Freewheelers) was not eligible due to his residency in SC.

Junior racer, Chris Wade (Charlotte Sports) won the gold, while Kenny Blackburn (Hearts Racing) took the silver.

Plenty at stake with double points and state medals on the line

By Tim Hopkin

More warm and sunny weather greeted the racers at race #5 of the North Carolina Cyclocross Series. With state championship medals on the line and the race awarding double points in the series standings a lot was at stake. The reworked Wicker Park course provided a fast mix of pavement, dirt paths and sand, which, if ridden correctly, was fast.

Ryan Trebon (Kona/CCA) returned to North Carolina to show everyone his race winning form and speed. After a blazing start down the starting straight, Trebon entered into the dirt section of the course first. Quickly a gap of up to a minute was established over the chasing group of three Fuji SE riders Daniel Doub, Charles Storm, and Charles Pendry. While the battle continued for the silver and bronze medals, smaller battles continued in the main field as riders looked for every opportunity to gain valuable series points. At the end of the race, Trebon took Gold, Doub silver and Storm got the bronze.

In the Women's A, Candice Blickem (Genesis/Scuba) powered her way to her fifth straight win, the gold medal and remained on top of the series standings with full points. Daniele Staskal (Doughnut Boys) won the silver and Kathleen Billington (Fuji / Diet Cheerwine) earned the bronze.

In the Master's 35+ Andy Applegate (Kona/CCA) battled with series leader Derek Powers and Rob Moran. Applegate used his power and skill to eventually drop Powers and Moran and earn his second straight gold medal. Powers earned silver and Moran bronze.

Other gold medal winners included Martin Visser (Master's 45+), Ryan McCall (Men's B), Lloyd Jones (Men's C), Sarah Worthington (Women's B) and Chris Wade (Juniors). Racing moves to Winston Salem's Reynolda Village the Sunday after Thanksgiving for race #6. For more information on the race visit www.nccyclocross.net.
