Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series #4

Mahoney Park, Lincoln, November 16, 2003

Schlake wins crash-filled day

By John Jr Lefler

While Darin Schlake (Team Kaos) motored to his third victory in the 2003 Nebraska Cyclo-cross Series, a fierce battle behind stirred with nearly every rider in the field going down at some point during the 60-minute, 14 lap contest at Mahoney Park Sunday afternoon in Lincoln. The flat, tight 1.2 mile circuit at Mahoney provided a different feel for the riders, but did nothing to slow down the lap times, which averaged a searing 4:15. After three laps, a lead group formed featuring the usual suspects, including Schlake, teammate Kevin Wilkins, Jay Thomas (LBC/Highgear) and Footloose-SNORT rider, Mark Savery. Trailing the leaders, Joe McWilliams (Team Kaos) worked to bridge the gap and helped launch Schlake. Nearing the midway point of the race, Savery fell off the pace of the lead group leaving the LBC/Highgear's Thomas isolated with the Kaos trio. Sensing an opportunity, Schlake pulled away from the lead group and established a 20 second advantage after half a lap. The chase behind from Thomas was thwarted by the Kaos tandem until Thomas broke free with 4 laps to go leaving McWilliams to scramble for fourth. Despite falling off of the lead group, Savery rode well to secure fifth place on the day fending off a strong late race attack from Cycle Works/Moose's Tooth rider, Sam Rosenau.

In the B race, the local boys were treated to a special guest. Saturn rider, Megan Elliot made the trip from her home in Tama, IA to get some training in before the National Championships next month in Portland. As Jarred Berger (LBC/Highgear) crushed the field with a dominant performance off the front all day, Elliot mixed it up holding down a solid top five place throughout the 45 minute race.

Special thanks to our sponsors, Sandhills Publishing, Lincoln Bicycle Co, SPY Optics, Bruegger's Bagels, Hyland Lumber, Pedro's and Pepsi Bottling of Lincoln.
