The world's best BMX riders will converge in Perth, Western Australia, this weekend as the riders swing into action at the 2003 UCI BMX World Championships.

In this new Olympic sport, over 1,500 competitors from 29 countries will swoop and jump their way around a specially constructed 370 metre track at the Burswood Dome. All competitors have qualified for the World Championships either through their national federations or through world ranking points, with competitors ranging from 5 through to 50 years old, and entries in the Elite and Junior Elite (17-18 years) championship classes will be competing for the prized world champion's medals and jerseys.

A number of current champions from the 2002 World Championships in Brazil will be in Perth to defend their titles. USA's Kyle Bennett will be looking to make it back-to-back championships in the Elite Men's class, while Randy Stumpfhauser from the US will be hoping to win back his Elite Cruiser title. In the Women's events, Argentina's Gabriela Diaz will be aiming to reclaim her world title in the Elite Women's class, as will last year's Junior Women's titleholder, Willy Kanis from the Netherlands.

The World Championships commence on Friday July 25 with an Opening Ceremony followed by racing in the Cruiser Class. Saturday will see riders in the Challenge Classes take to the course, and on Sunday racing will conclude when the Championship Classes titles will be decided. The World Championships will come to an end with the Closing Ceremony, where an official handover will be made to the Netherlands, the 2004 BMX World Championship hosts.

National pride will also be on the line when the National Team's finals are held on the final day, when the best riders from each of the competing countries will go head-to-head in a relay-type event.

About the venue: Burswood Dome, Perth

Burswood Dome is located on the Burswood Peninsula, and is part of the Burswood International Resort complex, located only a few mintues drive from the centre of Perth.

The Dome is Western Australia's major indoor entertainment venue, with a unique feature: an inflated Teflon-coated fibreglass roof, with a peak height of 35 metres. The roof enables natural light to filter into the complex and is held in position by a series of cables arranged in a special grid pattern. Eight huge fans maintain constant air pressure to ensure the roof is fully inflated at all times.

The arena is equivalent to the size of an international soccer pitch and for the UCI BMX World Championships, there is the capacity to seat up to 10,000 people.

The Track

A specially designed 370 metre track has been installed with the help of 100 members from local BMX clubs in Western Australia.

Over 2,000 tonnes of clay has been used in the construction of the track; material was supplied by local company Midland Brick.

Explanation of event categories

Challenger Level - Competing classes, other than elite and junior elite.

Championship Level - Competing classes at elite and junior elite level; riders use conventional BMX bikes with 20 inch wheels.

Cruiser Class - A separate class to the traditional BMX 20 inch wheels; cruiser class bikes have 24 inch wheels.
