Mildura-Coomealla Cycling Club

November 2, 2003

The Mildura-Coomealla Cycling Club conducted a 2 stage event on Sunday, November 2, to open its Spring-Summer season. Twenty club riders came out to play today in the brisk and cooling southerly winds which plague all cyclists this time of year.

A 16km time trial, the "race of truth", established the group configurations for a 48km road race. The 2-lap time trial won by Kevin Tankard with a time of 23 min 17 sec time. Peter Mulhearn followed with +13 secs then Mark Busch with +26 secs. Arthur Anderson recorded the best B grade rider time in the opening stage with a 26m:07s time to be ranked 7th.

The handicap road race comprised 5 bunches with the limit markers of "Billy" Wass and Kris Cerini out at 12 minutes from the scratchies. Time trial seeding saw a group of five at 8:30, Robbins, Pollock, Shipsides, Hale and Winton, the middle bunch (in TT order of merit) of Anderson, Bassi-Anstee, Wells, Dwyer, Lokan, Beruldsen and Liddle, at 5 minutes. The power riders followed in the next 2 groups being Giles, Brade and McNally and off scratch Tankard, Mulhearn and Busch. A deck-chair and stubby holder are the only offerings for competitors caught by the riders from these 2 bunches!

The second limit group seized a "once-in-a-season" opportunity when, at the end of lap 4, they held a 1,000 metre advantage and scratch had not gathered in the 7 rider bunch. Phillip Robbins was riding in the best form of his life and continually challenged his group to make the chasing bunches "hurt". The victims of his pace and energy were Richard Hale and Michael Shipsides in the closing stages. Barry Pollock coaxed the surviving duo of Peter Winton and "Harry" Robbins onto the finishing straight for a one on one tussle. Robbins burst away 150 metres out but Winton shifted up to the big gears and grinded him back to take out the road race by less than half a wheel for only his 3rd race win in 5 years.

A good time trial effort by Scott Giles (ranked 4th in order of merit) took its toll as he succumbed to hamstring problems and this reduced the power of his bunch somewhat today.

In the final analysis a three-way tie ensued for the L & V Westcott Trophy between Kevin Tankard, Dion Bassi-Anstee and Mark Busch. Points were awarded for placings in both stages and as it happened a good time trial effort reaped rewards for these A grade riders today. Arthur Anderson gained a very creditable 2nd overall with Peter Winton pinching a close third.

The Club's next race will be after the Port to Port charity ride, a time trial on the following Tuesday. Riders are reminded to check with the notice board at the "Lolly Shoppe".
