Stage 1 - May 27: Road race, 74 miles

Swanson Holds Off Field For Stage One Win at Monumental Memorial

By Sean Weide

Nature Valley/Penn Cycle's Dan Swanson of Plymouth, Minn., stayed clear of a charging field Saturday to win the first stage of the inaugural Monumental Memorial Cycling Weekend.

Swanson finished one second ahead of a pack of 12 riders, including two riders from nearby Lincoln, Neb. - Lincoln Plating-Lemond's Jon Randell, who finished second, and Team Kaos' Jarred Berger, who was third. The 74-mile race took nearly four hours to complete, due in part to riders straying off course and winds gusting to more than 30 mph.

More than 100 racers from eight states, as well as the Province of Manitoba in Canada, are competing in the three-day, four-stage race. Sunday, the racers will compete in two stages: a 20-mile individual time trial in the morning and a 65-mile road race in the afternoon. The final stage is a 75-minute criterium on Monday.

Confusion between a course marshal and a lead vehicle sent the field off course in the first 20 miles. After several miles of neutral riding, officials restarted the race.

"Unfortunately, wires were crossed between the lead vehicle and a course marshal," race promoter John Lefler, Jr. "But fortunately, we were able to quickly resolve a bad situation. I was impressed with the candor of the riders, considering the circumstances - and the heat."

With temperatures soaring into the mid-90s, Lincoln Plating-Lemond's Michael Munson and Joe McWilliams of Team Kaos formed a break after the restart and gained a lead of nearly three minutes at the 47-mile mark.

But the duo couldn't hold off the chasing efforts of three teams - Nature Valley/Penn Cycle, Grandstay/Out N About Gear and Team Manitoba/Woodcock Cycle - which reduced the lead to 40 seconds with less than eight miles remaining. The catch was made soon after and the lead group of 17 riders resigned themselves to sprinting it out at the finish.
