Dutch Creek Cyclo-Cross Classic

lle Crucis, NC, November 9, 2003

North Carolina Cyclo-Cross Series Race #3

Fuji SE proves dominant

By Tim Hopkin, Henderson County Parks and Recreation Dept.

For the third week in a row the riders from Fuji SE claimed the top podium spot in the Men’s A race. This time it was Charlie Storm (Cary, NC) who took top honors. Storm returned to NC after placing 6th Saturday in PA in the Verge Series race. Team mate Daniel Doub (Cary, NC) winner of last weeks race finished second. Andy Applegate (Asheville, NC) riding for Kona/CCA rounded out the top three. The race which started at tremendous pace soon had riders spread across the Dutch Creek Cyclo-Cross Classic course, one of the hardest courses in the NC Cyclo-Cross Series. To toughen the racers this year’s event featured a quick splash across Dutch Creek, a chilling experience since temperatures hovered in the 50s all day.

In the Women’s A race Candice Blichem (Genesis/Scuba) powered to her third win of the series and now stand a top of the series standing with maximum points. Also scoring maximum points after three wins were Derek Powers (Doughnut Boys) who fought off a determined Martin Visser (NOC) who moved from the 45+ group to mix it up with the younger 35+ racers. Sarah Worthington also racing for Doughnut Boys scored her third win in the Women’s B racing on her single speed mt. bike. (Other winners were Arthur Reaves in the Master’s 45+, Kenneth Borgeson in the Men’s B, Lloyd Jones in the Men’s C and Chris Saxion in the Juniors.

The Dutch Creek Cyclo-Cross Classic hosted by Boone Bike and Touring featured an event record participation of 125 racers. Racing moves next to Burlington, NC for race #4 in the series on Sunday, November 16 at Burlington City Park.
